Mastering the Acclimation Process
Bob’s expertise extended to the meticulous handling of the hardwood. Before installation, the Ipe and Garapa deck boards were strategically “stickered” to ensure proper acclimation. Storing the boards in a shaded area allowed for optimal hardwood acclimation. It’s a well-known fact that wood boards shrink as they dry, and this process guarantees a superior finished product. Additionally, a protective coat of Penofin hardwood formula oil finish was applied to all sides of the decking boards, ensuring longevity and resilience against the elements.
Precision in Installation
Once the deck boards had acclimated adequately, the installation process began with the Ipe boards taking the spotlight. Moisture control was paramount, especially for a deck situated close to the ground. Bob skillfully graded the area under the deck, diverting water away from the structure and utilizing gravel for effective water control. Hidden fasteners were used for the Ipe boards, and careful trimming ensured a perfect fit within the deck framing layout.
