When Ballinger Architects, hailing from the vibrant city of Philadelphia, embarked on a mission to design and construct a rooftop deck and parapet walls for Adelphi University’s Nexus and Welcoming Center building, they sought the perfect materials to bring their vision to life. The choice was clear: Mataverde Ipe decking, the Climate-Shield Rain Screen System, and Ipe cladding were meticulously selected to meet the unique demands of this project.

Adelphi University, nestled within an arboretum, provided an exceptional canvas for this design. Ensuring harmony with its lush surroundings, the project team demonstrated a profound respect for the environment, incorporated sustainable design practices, and exhibited sensitivity to the existing architecture. As noted on architizer.com, the outcome is a green roof that not only enhances energy efficiency but also showcases a range of other environmentally conscious features integrated into the building’s design.

The star of the show, Mataverde Premium Ipe hardwood, was not only chosen for the rooftop decking but also served as the cladding for the rain screen system. Recognized for its innate durability, rich color spectrum, and enduring beauty, Mataverde Ipe hardwood has left its mark on countless successful projects across North America for several decades.

One particularly intriguing challenge was to design and construct a back-ventilated rain screen system for the parapet wall and rooftop planters. To accommodate the electrical wiring for in-wall lighting, Climate-Shield marine-grade aluminum z-girts were strategically employed, creating a deeper wall cavity on the parapet wall. These z-girts proved to be as enduring as the Climate-Shield rain screen clips, which are also crafted from marine-grade aluminum. The end result is an awe-inspiring Ipe-clad parapet wall that exudes an aura of grandeur.

The planter wall was constructed in a similar fashion to the parapet wall, utilizing Climate-Shield Z-girts, a rain screen system, and Mataverde Ipe cladding. This amalgamation of robust components, innovative design, and impeccable construction techniques culminated in a project of timeless allure and longevity that will continue to grace Adelphi University’s campus for generations to come.
